Irbesartan Hydrochlorothiazide - Side Effects

Irbesartan (INN) is a so-called angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It is used as a drug for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

Irbesartan was discovered by Sanofi (now Sanofi-Aventis), which together with the Bristol-Myers Squibb, and further developed world places on the market. Brand names of drugs based on Irbesartan are Aprovel, Karvea, and Avapro.

Aprovel and Karvea authorized in the European Union since August 27, 1997.

Action

Irbesartan inhibits the action of angiotensin II, a hormone in the blood that narrows the blood vessels and increases the blood pressure. Irbesartan binds to the receptors to which angiotensin binds, thus inhibiting the action of angiotensin. Therefore, the blood vessels dilate again, lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of long term damage from high blood pressure, such as stroke.

Other angiotensin II receptor antagonists (whose INN ends -sartan) are: candesartan, eprosartan, losartan, olmesartan, tasosartan, telmisartan and valsartan.

Irbesartan is also combined with another blood pressure lowering agent, viz. The diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Drugs with this combination are: Irbesartan Hydrochlorothiazide BMS (Bristol-Myers Squibb), Irbesartan Hydrochlorothiazide Winthrop, Karvezide, Avalide, Avapro HCT and CoAprovel.

Indications

Irbesartan is administered to patients with essential hypertension (high blood pressure that is not caused by another disease). It is also used for the treatment of kidney disease (diabetic nephropathy) in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes).

Irbesartan side effects

The most common side effects (affects 1 to 10 patients in 100) are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, muscle and joint pain. There was also an increase in creatine kinase (an enzyme found in muscle) was adopted. In patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes has been established with kidney disease, is often found at increased levels of potassium in the blood.

Contraindications

Irbesartan should not be used in people who may be hypersensitive (allergic) to irbesartan or any other ingredients, or be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should not be administered to children.
