What is inguinal hernia?

Inguinal hernia is a condition which is composed of a protuberance of the peritoneum in the groin area, through which bodies that are normally found in the abdominal cavity will bulge.

There are several types of inguinal hernias distinguished, among other things depending on the location (hernia) where the contents of the abdomen will protrude.
  • The congenital hernia, which occurs when the processus vaginalis peritonaei not closed;
  • Direct (through the back wall of the inguinal canal) hernia, behind the artery epigastria inferior;
  • Indirect inguinal hernia (through the annulus inguinal canal in the groin scrotum direction) along the artery before epigastria inferior;
  • The femoral hernia (the port where large vessels pass through to the bone).
The patient (usually a man) notices a bulge in the groin that comes to pressing and (initially) goes back to stop pushing or lie down. Later, the patient can usually bulge itself push back (repurchase them). Previously used for this purpose also "break ties", tools which lobbied at the fracture site through which the stomach contents did not protrude.

A hernia can have various causes. Usually there is a weakening of the abdominal wall. This may be congenital or the result of heavy lifting, obesity, problems with bowel movements or cough a lot. Also, the long-term play wind instruments increases the likelihood of getting an inguinal hernia. Also a wide inguinal canal predisposes to fracture. In women, inguinal hernias much less common and are often the femoral type.

An inguinal hernia is often accompanied by any inconvenience, such as a nagging feeling in the groin area. But often a patient has no complaints. In the pinch of the contents of the hernial sac at the fracture gate, the narrowest portion, of the blood vessels occurs by pinching severe pain; This is a medical emergency and must be operated on soon because there may be necrosis and gangrene of the intestine.

A doctor may consist of a simple hernia fix. Because an inguinal hernia not automatically restores and in the course of time may worsen, surgery is required. Traditionally, an inguinal hernia is repaired by restoring the peritoneum with tissue of the abdominal wall itself, or by placing in a piece of plastic. Since relatively short inguinal hernias are also treated with keyhole surgery (laparoscopic procedure) but the results in the long term are not yet known. The preferred treatment is at present the use of a plastic mat according to the Lichtenstein method.

A surgical repair of an inguinal hernia is only necessary if the patient has symptoms (such as a strangulated hernia). A painless swelling in moments of increased pressure in the groin is no reason for surgery. However, it will almost always increase such a inguinal hernia, so that an operation is ultimately necessary.

If there is in the patient a contraindication exists for a surgical treatment, a conservative treatment is applied with an inguinal hernia band. The break band is composed of a circular band with a compression pad on the fracture port and a groin strap to support the broken good.
