What is interferon beta-1a


Interferon beta-1a belongs to a group of medicines called interferons. These are, of course, prior to coming-proteins that play a role in the immune system.

How they work is not fully understood. Interferons are a natural substance and play a role in the immune system. Interferons help to reduce damage to the central nervous system and, in particular, to limit the meyeline in MS.

Avonex
Avonex was in 1995 placed on the US market by Biogen Idec. Avonex once per week is injected intramuscularly, with an amount of the 30mcg. In the case of a so-called CIS, the one-time occurrence of MS symptoms, Avonex may even be prescribed.

Rebif
Rebif was in 1996 by Serono, Inc. placed on the US market. Rebif is given three times a week subcutaneously injected, in a preferred dose of 44mcg. Although the patents of medication seven years ago in the United States was the difference in use and injection sufficient reason to speak of such an innovation in the product, Rebif, Avonex next might come to exist.

At Times:
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Pain and inflammation of the injection site

Rare:
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Palpitations and chest pain
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite, insomnia and nervousness
  • Hair Loss
  • Drug hypersensitivity
